Thanks to its durability, low weight, and wide range of uses, it became an indispensable material in packaging, construction, the automotive industry, medicine, and many other sectors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, that very durability is now one of the biggest environmental challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plastic breaks down very slowly in nature. Instead of disappearing, it fragments into ever smaller particles under the influence of sunlight, weather conditions, and mechanical wear. These particles are called microplastics.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, researchers detect them almost everywhere\u2014 in rivers, lakes, oceans, the air, soil, precipitation, and also in drinking water.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What are microplastics?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microplastics are plastic particles smaller than 5 millimetres.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their size can vary greatly\u2014from particles a few millimetres in size to microscopic particles that can only be detected with advanced laboratory equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are most commonly divided into two groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Primary microplastics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are particles that are already manufactured in very small sizes. They are used as raw material in industry or in the production of various plastic products. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secondary microplastics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much more common are secondary microplastics, which form as larger plastic items break down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breakdown is influenced by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sunlight (UV radiation),<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rain,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wind,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">temperature changes,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mechanical plastic item gradually breaks down into ever smaller particles.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Where do microplastics come from?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microplastics do not enter the environment from a single source.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common sources are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plastic packaging,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plastic bottles,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">synthetic textile fibres,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wear from car tyres,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">industrial processes,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wear of various plastic products.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because plastic breaks down very slowly, the amount of it in the environment increases year after year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Where can we find them?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows that microplastics are not limited to the oceans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are also present in:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rivers,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lakes,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span everyday environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Why are microplastics so challenging to study?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first glance, one might think microplastics are always the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In reality, it is quite the opposite.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each particle can differ in:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">size,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shape,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colour,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">type of plastic (polymer),<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how it was formed,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">degree of degradation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Precisely because of these differences, microplastics analysis is considerably more demanding than standard laboratory water analyses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Can we see microplastics?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most microplastic particles cannot be seen with the naked eye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water can be completely clear, odourless, and pleasant-tasting, but that does not mean it does not contain microscopic particles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The presence of microplastics can only be reliably confirmed using appropriate laboratory methods.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Why is microplastics discussed much more today than in the past?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A major reason is not only the greater presence of plastic in the environment, but also advances in science.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modern laboratory methods make it possible to detect significantly smaller particles than could be analysed ten or twenty years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, researchers today understand the prevalence of microplastics and their pathways in the environment much better.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What does science say?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microplastics are one of the fastest-growing areas of environmental research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/analizavode.si\/blog\/kaj-pravi-who-o-mikroplastiki.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The World Health Organization (WHO)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and many other scientific institutions emphasise that much more research is still needed, especially regarding the impact of microplastics on human health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, we can say with certainty that microplastics are present in the environment and can also be detected in drinking water.
